Just when you thought that the ever-ambitious creative drive of this duo might confine their music to the underground, Mica and Matthew keep surprising us. Last august, LA-based Magdalena Bay pulled of a full live presentation of their conceptual release, Imaginal Disk LP in front of a several-thousand crowd at Lollapalloza Chicago. And last week, they just released two new singles that confirm just how far their sound has evolved.
Both songs are extremely hard to label. While «Star Eyes» leans into playful psychedelic strings and sax bursts, «Second Sleep» shift keys with efortless precision subtly nodding to the polished production of Steely Dan’s Gaucho LP. This duo might just be at the verge of mainstream recognition. Whether that is true or not, we’re just about to find out.
